STELLA WEMBLEY BRAVELY TACKLES BOWIE'S ALIEN AND WE LOVE IT!
We've long been a fan of Stella Wembley here at the station, and over the last couple of years have seen the Dark Queen's Empire extend into all kids of photography and video making domains. But she never stopped making music, in fact never slept it seems (we've decided that Stella is actually a vampire) and whilst hard at work on her debut (long-awaited!) album, has continued to release singles that have all been dark, troubling and brilliant. When she announced she was going to cover David Bowie's 'Loving The Alien' however, I must admit that I for one was more than a little... concerned.
Now, I am a huge Bowie fan, but there was an era, in which Loving was released, that I felt was a little MEH. What, I wondered, would the Dark Queen find in what was quintessentially a pop song that would continue that streak of dark and disturbing music-craft of the last couple of years?
I needn't have worried. Of course, given the theme of the original song- Bowie's dislike of organised religion and a plea therefore for greater harmony and understanding between different faiths- there was something meaty in the lyrics for Stella to sink her fangs into, but surprisingly it provides musically charged blood for her to also ingest and amp up. Okay, so I am killing the vampire analogy, but the point needs to be made: I actually prefer this version to the Bowie original. It has that dark electro-pop looping that Stella has used to great effect on other tracks, and her distinctive voice and affected use of emphasis on key words or lines, makes the song indeed much darker in meaning; that is the violence of religious-incited or driven wars, are much more overtly looked upon with disgust and revulsion in this version of the song,
And don't forget there is a Lloyd Price remix which makes the music even darker, to an almost industrial strength electro-pop sound. Both versions are excellent and both versions have already been played across various shows on the station- and will continue to be.
All in all, this is a single that makes us want that long-awaited first album to arrive even more!!! But to fund that album, you all need to go buy the CD/mp3 downloads, and related merchandise. And whilst you are there, go buy the back catalogue too. You know it makes sense.
