In The Revolution Gazette
Hi everyone, finally, WIX have done the migration from the Old Forum to the New Forum. Only took 8 days for an action that warned "this may take a few minutes..." ffs, but anyway here we are.
1. The New Forum will be called that for a couple of weeks. The existing Forum will remain, but only as a backup should the New Forum have another bug that needs fixing. Then the old Forum will be removed and the New Forum renamed 'Forum'.
2. Although the New Forum will be up today, and posting and commenting live, there is a lot of work on the format to be done (which I hope to finish by Monday) so you may find yourselves a little confused by the layout for a day or two.
3. At this moment, we can't have Rooms within Rooms as we do with the old Forum, meaning there are currently 32 main Rooms (hence the work needed for easier navigation). We do hope WIX will remedy this soon.
4. Your existing membership should be automatically transferred over later this weekend. I say should because it's another WIX tool and let's be honest, they are pretty crap at testing.
5. Once you are in a Room, thankfully, posting, commenting and reacting to posts is pretty much the same as in the Old Forum.
Apologies for this upheaval, it was NOT our doing, we were not consulted and didn't even have a warning it was happening. The layout options of the new Forum are basic compared to the old Forum but we're told, features will be added.
From what I can see, the only real benefit of the new Forum is that it is integrated into the main Editor and is not an add-on applet like the old Forum was. In other words, when WIX make changes to the site editor, the formatting of the New Forum shouldn't damage the Forum as before. We will see.
In the meantime, I am off to pour a rather large rum and get on with the under the hood crap... have a good weekend folks.

For the next couple of weeks, you'll see a new menu Item for a while called 'GROUPS'. This is the brand new, fully integrated WIX replacement for the Forum engine we've been using for the last few years.
The formatting of the replacement will most likely take me a few days to sort, as will importing all our historical posts from the Forum. However, once that is complete we'll delete the old 'Forum' from the Menu and rename the 'Groups' to 'Forum'.
If you want to play around with the new system once it's up, please feel free to do so. In the meantime, the giyz will put the links up for their live shows as they also begin the transition to using the new system as there may be an overlap from the old to the new over the next fortnight or so.
Thanks!

Kids today can never understand the delight of a gatefold cover (let alone a double album!).
For example, the album 'Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes' by ELOY, is musical heaven. Produced in 1979 the sound can stand up to anything recorded today.
But the icing on the cake is the cover. Gloriously disturbing, you had to take it out of the rack and look at it. THEN you discovered it was a gatefold and opening it up you had a front and back that looked like this:
and an interior that looked like this:
Everything about this album SCREAMED quality. And the vinyl itself was heavy, solid, truly physical.
I was sold on this album before I had even played it.
And when I did, my 14 year old ears gave my brain enchanting visions of a humanity reaching beyond the confines of its Earthly origins and becoming something both wonderful and terrifying.
What gatefold album did you buy that blew you away- not just musically, but everything, the entire package!?

In Dee's Reviews
We're blessed with some amazing blues-rock artists at the moment, and I mean specifically here in the UK. Our excellent US blues rock cousins aside, we can quote the likes of Rebecca Downes, Chantel McGregor, King King, Xander & The Peace Pirates, Tom Killner, and many many more. And now we can add one more blues rock duo to the roll call.
Not that Doris Brendel and Lee Dunham are completely new of course! Doris has been making music for decades, and her partnership with Lee goes back a long way as well. But as a duo, they have mostly produced experimental, prog type albums that I am sad to say we here at RRO had not come across (don't worry, we're on it now!), but we've played songs from Doris here and there in the 15 years we've been around in one guise or other. Then a month or two ago, Doris sent us a couple of songs from an album she promised would be a 'surprising turn' to a blues vibe, bringing her dusky Elkie Brooks style vocals and Lee's 'I can turn my axe to anything' excellent guitar playing to something they just, apparently, felt the need to do.
And boy, are we glad that they did do just that.
'Big Blue Sky' is an album that draws on many blues motifs, including that blend of blues and proper late 60s/early 70s soul music that shines across many of the tunes on offer here. But, and here's what's key, they then take those motifs and add a modern blues-rock edge to the proceedings, delivering a unique experience. It's not the out and out blues-rock of King King, nor is it the old blues guitar style of say a BB King, but the album delivers tunes that are cheeky and flirty on one end of the spectrum- Slow Wifi Weekend & Cold Coffee Blues for example, and seriously soulful on the other- Red Letter Blues and Today's The Day as examples of that. In the middle of the spectrum there are nods to old style blues, guitar blues, blues rock and all updated to a modern sound and musical presentation.
I've had the album on rotation since I got back this morning and I can see three of us here on Revolution Radio playing songs regularly across our shows- The Baron (aka me), The Trooper and our newest DJ Black Dog. But I am nabbing Red Letter Blues, Satin Row, Hold On, Today's the Day and Big Blue Sky first for my shows! There's no point in being the boss if you can't have some perks!
Now, earlier, I compared Doris's vocals to Elkie Brooks, and it's a comparison that's been given by other reviewers over the years. But Doris has a voice that has more melody, more range, able to sing rock and prog and pop and blues without seeming to struggle at any time, and it simply drips with soul on the excellent 'Red Letter Days', singing over a gorgeous guitar riff and under-current solo from Lee. And the inclusion of a piano/keyboard loop that is straight out of that start-of-the-70s soul sound (y'know, artists that were recording somewhere between 60s Motown and mid 70s funk eras) is sheer genius. It may well be my favourite song on the album. And the album is full of great songs.
It would also be criminal not to acknowledge Lee Dunham's beautiful and versatile guitar work on this album, whether it's the guitar blues riff of 'Satin Row' or the soulful clean note picking in 'Red Letter Days' or the more traditional blues motif on 'Today's The Day', this is a man who clearly knows his guitar.
If you're looking for a great modern blues album, then look no further. 'Big Blue Sky' is out now from Sky-Rocket Records in digital, CD and vinyl formats and you can get it from https://dorisbrendel.com/store !
You won't be disappointed.
