We all love rock, but rock as we know is now a varied set of genres and sub-genres, ranging from traditional hard rock to Prog, Southern, Blues, Pomp, Metal, Thrash, Country Rock, NWOBHM, AOR and so on. So which of these, if you had to choose, is your primary type of rock? And why is it so?

My favourite genre is Prog-Rock from the likes of Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd etc especially from the 70's era because that was what I was listening to throughout my University years. But, as others have said, it depends on my mood at the time. I love all types of music from Classical to Heavy Metal, except for 'X-Factor' type dross, of course.
I can't pick a favourite style because I listen to whatever type of rock music suits my mood at a certain time.
The thing that I love about rock music is the sheer energy of it and how it can calm me at times, the only thing about that I don't like is the grunting of some vocalists.
As much as i am a massive fan of Southern Rock, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet etc
If i had to choose a specific genre it would be 80's Metal, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Bon Jovi and the likes of, purely because of the high energy style of music. If i am really stuck in a rut i find the music lifts me out of the doldrums.
I know I set this question but I am still finding it difficult to choose as I often prefer different genres at different times. Generally speaking however I live in what could be called the hard rock genre, so the likes of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, UFO, MSG, AC/DC, Uriah Heep etc. Why? Probably because that's where I got into rock in the first place.
Generally speaking when I step out of that I go for Prog- especially the likes of The Alan Parsons Project, ELOY, Pink Floyd, Steven Wilson, Devin Townsend, Magenta etc, including of course our very own Paul Limb. The reason for that is easy too: Prog takes me on journeys that stimulate my mind and imagination, and as a lot of Prog usually takes a concept album approach, that also appeals to the storyteller in me.
